Yes, I know this is a travel and photo blog, and not a sports blog, but I just have to write about this here…
I think there was something in the water at AT&T Park in San Francisco, especially whatever Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner drank last night. Because they come up to plate in every game (as opposed to American League pitchers who have a silly designated hitter rule), National League baseball pitchers have to bat, just like all the other eight players on the field. And they NEVER hit home runs, let alone grand slams.
But this 24-year-old kid – someone exactly half my age – with the funny but somehow cool name did it!
That’s why I love baseball. Everyone criticizes it as a slow and boring sport, but unexpected freak events can occur like this at any time to any player.
And the Giants needed every one of those four runs, as they barely won, 6-5, against the Rockies (the team I should be rooting for since I’m an adopted Coloradan, but I’ve never supported the local teams in 12 years of being here). At least MadBum helped himself. Sometimes the Giants hitters just don’t do that for their pitchers, especially when they can hold the opposing batters to just a run or two.
GO GIANTS (part of the reason why I’m a Californian in Exile)!!
